Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> a valid way of tackling a new research fieldin which the body of knowledge <strong>is</strong> very much in its infancy. That <strong>is</strong> why I would assert that thework <strong>is</strong> best placed within the growing tradition of 'Living Theory':"We explain that practitioner action researchers should be seen as capable of makingsignificant contributions <strong>to</strong> quality theory, but <strong>to</strong> achieve th<strong>is</strong> perception, they need <strong>to</strong>show how they engage with <strong>is</strong>sues of theory <strong>and</strong> knowledge in explaining why theirresearch should be assessed in its own terms <strong>and</strong> from within its own establ<strong>is</strong>hed scholarlytraditions." I make th<strong>is</strong> claim on the bas<strong>is</strong> of my knowledge of the field which indicatesthat t<strong>here</strong> <strong>is</strong> no extant theory about au<strong>to</strong>/pedagogy or that no one has attempted <strong>to</strong> describe thealbeit theoretical space at the interlocution of ep<strong>is</strong>temology, myself <strong>and</strong> (information)technology.Case study research <strong>is</strong> usually regarded as a qualitative method (see Silverman, 2001) <strong>and</strong> <strong>is</strong> thusgrouped appropriately at the end of the continuum of research paradigms with philosophical,theoretical <strong>and</strong> phenomenological traditions. However, th<strong>is</strong> work ar<strong>is</strong>es out of a very groundedset of experiences <strong>and</strong> I propose the graph at figure 16 as an illustration of how the work <strong>is</strong>positioned in relation <strong>to</strong> other aspects of human enquiry. I would suggest that the intendedinsider participative work sits within the uppermost adumbration, since the illustrative momentsselected <strong>will</strong> be used <strong>to</strong> attempt <strong>to</strong> explore that space w<strong>here</strong> applied theory flows in<strong>to</strong> reflexiveprofessional<strong>is</strong>m but <strong>is</strong> made meaningful in its dynamic <strong>and</strong> cyclical interaction with a real self.163Simon Hughes Ph.D. Thes<strong>is</strong> (Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 2012)
