The act of au<strong>to</strong>biography, above all, reveals <strong>to</strong>the student the truth of th<strong>is</strong> proposition, <strong>and</strong> in so doing, prepares him <strong>to</strong> become aresponsible <strong>and</strong> responsive teacher." (Abbs, 1972 p.6)The purpose of th<strong>is</strong> section <strong>is</strong> <strong>to</strong> set out as clearly as possible the sources <strong>and</strong> influences on myuse in th<strong>is</strong> thes<strong>is</strong> of the term ‘knowledge’. As <strong>will</strong> be shown later in the thes<strong>is</strong> (section 2.2x),kNowledge (N 2 ), as I underst<strong>and</strong> it, <strong>is</strong> a significant fac<strong>to</strong>r in the theoretical framework which thestudy <strong>is</strong> exploring.What lies at the heart of my inquiry <strong>is</strong> the question “How do I know what I know?” <strong>and</strong> thesubsidiary question, “If t<strong>here</strong> <strong>is</strong> <strong>some</strong>thing that I don’t know, how do I set about trying <strong>to</strong> find i<strong>to</strong>ut?” Throughout the thes<strong>is</strong>, I <strong>take</strong> <strong>time</strong> <strong>to</strong> point out the moments when what I was learning intransit changed the way the study was developing <strong>and</strong> the ep<strong>is</strong>temological processes throughwhich it was travelling. Though challenging <strong>to</strong> traditional research methodology, it <strong>is</strong> th<strong>is</strong>specific organic, dynamic, living theoretical process that makes th<strong>is</strong> thes<strong>is</strong> unique <strong>and</strong>, arguably,original.Within the context of the study, what I am talking about <strong>here</strong> contributes directly <strong>to</strong> that aspec<strong>to</strong>f the framework that I character<strong>is</strong>e later as N 2 - kNowledge. <strong>It</strong> <strong>is</strong> a mixture of prior knowledgethat <strong>is</strong>, that which I have acquired in formal or informal learning contexts in the past <strong>and</strong>knowledge that has been set down <strong>by</strong> others as an outcome of their own research <strong>and</strong> learning:in the words of Glynn Kirkham (2003), "The words <strong>and</strong> works of others."30Simon Hughes Ph.D. Thes<strong>is</strong> (Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 2012)
