If the fragments had been then collectedand put together, much of this beautiful design mighthave been saved, but they remained on the spot wherethey fell till after the establishment of the Greek kingdomat Athens (1833), when such of them as were extant weregathered up and placed in a magazine on the Acropolis.They were subsequently moulded, and casts of them arenow exhibited in the Elgin Eoom. Between the time ofMorosini and the middle of the last century, whenDalton drew the western pediment, the work of destructionhad been carried much further. In the right wingof the composition the figures N, O, Q, S, T, and in tholeft wing only four figures. One of these is probably the Poseidonthe other may be the figure marked H. On the groundbelow the pediment lies the body of a draped figure, perhapsAthene, and a fragment which may belong to thePoseidon.All that remained in position in the western pedimentwhen Lord Elgin's agents came to Athens were thefigures B and C in the north angle, and in the south anglethe lower part of the reclining female figure W.
