contained tlie tomb of Cecrops.THE ERECHTHEION. 233The Pandroseion, whichcontained the sacred olive-tree of Athene, and a smallshrine of Pandrosos, was annexed to the outside of thewest end of the building.The Elgin Collection contains several specimens of thearchitectural decorations of the Erechtheion. In the aboveplan (fig. 18), those parts of the building are indicated byletters from which fragments have been obtained. So-called Caryatid, or Canephoros, Kavrjcfyopos (fig. 19).One of the six female figures which served as columns inthe southern portico of the Erechtheion.In the survey ofthe building these figures are called Korae, " maidens."They have been called Canephori (see p. 149) by Visconti(Memoirs on the Sculptures of the Earl of Elgin, p. 122), andothers. It is true that the maidens here represented aresuch as those represented on the Parthenon frieze. Butthere is nothing that specially connects them with theCanephori, or persons who bore the sacred vessels on theirheads. By some wi-iters they have been called Caryatids,on account of a statement of Vitruvius (i., chap. 1) thatwomen of Carya, a town of Arcadia, were represented asarchitectui'al supports—a punishment which they incurredfor betraying the Greeks to the Persians.The figure hero described wears a long chiton, whichis drawn up under the girdle, falling in rich folds, andis fastened on each shoulder by a circular brooch. Attachedto this is the diploidion, which falls down beforeand behind. In front it falls to the waist; behind itwould trail on the ground, if a part were not looped up tothe shoulders, so as to make a deep fold, falling as low asthe hips. The hair from the back of the head falls in a
