POLYCLEITOS. 267The head was found at a distance of two-thirds of amile from the torso. The torso was found in 1862 in theRoman Theatre, at Vaisun (^Vaucluse).Marble ; height, 6 feet 1 inch. Restorations :—Nose, fingers ofright hand, parts of left thigh and of left shin and heel ; alsothe upper part of the stump. Statue of anude youth standing, tying a band (taenia) about hishead. Both arms were raised, but the left is lost. Thisfigure, likethe Diadumenos of Vaison (No. 500), standsprincipally on the right leg, but the left leg is differentlyplaced, and the whole pose is thereby altered. By theside of the figure is a stump of a palm.The hair falls in curls, and the figure is more youthfulthan the Diadumenos of Vaison. Except in the similarityof subject these statues have little in common, andif the Vaison figure represents the statue of Polycleitos,this figure would appear to be either an independentrendering of the same subject, or only remotely derivedfrom Polycleitos.
