At thebottom it varies between low relief and about 1^ inch.The whole surface of the relief is thus slightly tilted overtowards the spectator, in order to compensate as far aspossible fur the disadvantageous conditions under whichthe frieze had to be viewed. The length of each end ofthe Parthenon frieze was 69 ft. (> in. ; the length of eachlong side was 191 ft. 11 in. The length of the entire10 in.frieze was therefore 522 ft.The frieze, which was nearly complete in the time ofCarrey, suffered greatly in the explosion, particularlyabout the middle of the two long sides. Unfortunately,however, Carrey only made drawings of the west end ; theeast end, except its central slab which had been takendown ; about 74 feet in the middle of the south side ; andabout 78 ft. 6 in. at the east end of the north side. Stuartand Pars drew a considerable amount of the frieze, but notmuch of what has since been entirely lost. The followingtable shows approximately the state of the whole frieze.Ea.t. South. West.
