The marshal (No. 62) standing atthe side of the horses stretches out his right hand towardsthe charioteer with the forefinger extended, a gesturewhich indicates that he is giving an order. The rivetholes on the horses' crests show that the reins were ofbronze.Slabs xxvi., xxvii., of Michaelis, contained two chariotXXVI.,groups which we only know through Carrey's drawings. XXV 11.In both the horses are springing forward ; cf. No. 345, 20.Michaelis inserts to represent slab xxviii. a fragment XXYIII.which belongs to the north side, slab xxiv.The lower corner on the left side of xxix. has been XXIX.cast from a fragment at Athens, which has been identifiedsince the publication of the work of Michaelis. Thisfragment supplies the missing part of the wheel and asmall piece of flj'ing drapery belonging to one of thefigures in the chariot. In this group the marshal at theside of the chariot is wanting. On the right-hand edge ofthis slab, just above the horses' forelegs and close to thejoint, is part of the outline of a shield. This shield musthave belonged to one of the figures in the chariot followingon the next slab ; it is evident, therefore, that betweenxxix. and xxx. was another slab, now lost, which wecannot recognise in any of Carrey's drawings.66. The armed figure (No. 6G) wears the Corinthian helmet, XXX.which does not occur elsewhere on the frieze. The handleof his shield was of bronze, of which a small portion stillremains in the rivet hole.Other rivet holes on the crestsof the horses show that the reins and the hestnr for attachingthe yoke to the pole were also of bronze. Here, as inxxix., the marshal is wanting. The horses' heads, whichare treated with more freedom on this slab than elsewhereon the frieze, are of extraordinary beauty.
