PHIGALEIAN FEIEZE. 283530. Two Centaurs heave a mighty stone to crush theinvulnerable Kaineus. Kaineus is half-buried and holdshis shield above his head. He probably held a sword inthe right hand. Both Centaurs wear lions' skins. Thesame subject occurs on the frieze of the Theseion. Nexton the right is a Lapith armed with shield and helmet,who seems to be dragging the Centaur by the hair. The remaining slab on this side contains a part of thebattle of Greeks and Amazons. As the Amazon slabs arclonger than theslabs of Centaurs by about 10 feet, it isclear that they must have filled two sides and a part of athird. (See above, p. 278.)On the left a Greek and an Amazon are engaged incombat. The Greek has a helmet, boots, and a chitonwhich leaves the right shoulder bare. He advances hialeft arm with the mantle hanging from it, in the manner ofHarmodios in the group of the Athenian Tyrannicides(compare the Panathenaic vase in the Fourth Vase Room,which has this group on the shield of Athene). TheAmazon wears a similar chiton, and rushes forwardagainst the Greek, in the attitude of the Aristogciton inthe group mentioned above.
