BY WAY OF DECEPTION 95between the Mossad Academy and the undercover department <strong>of</strong>the Tel Aviv police. We were the bait.Arik, 28 at the time, spoke English and looked a lot like kidnappedChurch <strong>of</strong> England envoy Terry Waite. He'd been in militaryintelligence before he joined the course. He was the biggest liar onthe face <strong>of</strong> the earth. If he said good morning, you had to checkout the window first. Arik wasn't beaten that badly in the policeincident because he was talking — lying, no doubt — but talking.Arik knew that if you talked you wouldn't be beaten.But the other guy, Jacob, kept saying, "I don't know what youwant." A big cop slapped him and his head was smashed againstthe wall. He suffered a hairline fracture <strong>of</strong> the skull, and wasunconscious for two days and in hospital for six weeks. Hereceived his salary for another year, but he left the course.When we were beaten up, it was like a competition. These copswere out to prove they were better than us. It was worse thanreally being captured. Commanders on both sides would say, "Ibet you can't break my guys." Then, "Oh yeah? How far can I go?"We complained at the bablat that there was no point in beingbeaten up so severely. We were told when you fall, don't resist,talk. Your captor won't go to chemicals as long as you're talking.Every time we were on an exercise, there was the danger we'd becaught by the cops. It made us learn to take precautions.At one point, the class schedule had a lecture from Mark Hessner*slated for the next day. It was on mutual operations, somethingcalled "Operation Ben Baker," which the Mossad had done inconjunction with French intelligence. My buddies and I decided toget a jump on things by studying the case the night before, soafter class that evening, we went back to the Academy and up toRoom 6, a safe room on the second floor where the files werestored.
