160 BY WAY OF DECEPTIONNo matter, Itsik listened, then wrote in his book: "A point welltaken."I turned to Kauly. "Shai —""Look," Kauly replied, "don't involve me in this."* * *The next day, I asked to start my second assignment right away. Itwould give me the opportunity to be outside the safe house forseveral days. I was already sick of being in the same place asJerry. What I had to do was make contact with a British diplomat whowas in charge of maintaining all our military graveyards (mainlyfrom World War I) in Israel. He had an office in Ramlah, just eastof Tel Aviv, site of a large cemetery, and an office in the Britishembassy in Tel Aviv. The man had been spotted several times bythe Shaback stopping his car on the highway, taking pictures ofmilitary installations, then driving off. We suspected he was eitherin intelligence himself or working for someone else. As a result, theShaback had sent in a request to have him checked out.My first order of business was to concoct a reason to meet thisman. Why not a movie again? After booking a room at theCarleton Hotel, just across from the Marina in Tel Aviv's HayarkonStreet, I went to a monument near the spot where British generalAllenby's troops had crossed the Yarkon River during World War I,ending four centuries of Ottoman rule over the Holy Land. Withthe dates of the battles in mind, and the names of the brigadesthat had fought, I then headed for another large British cemeteryoutside Haifa, searching tombstones until I found one with thename of a soldier (McPhee) who had fought and died at that time.Posing as a Canadian from Toronto, complete with business cards,I said that I would be doing a movie about a family that hadmoved to Canada from London, but had one member who'd diedin the battle to free the Holy Land. First I called the office inRamlah and told the story to a Christian Arab woman there. Shegave me the target's phone number at the embassy, so I calledhim, told him the story, gave him McPhee's name (saying I didn'tknow where he was buried),
