I'll let you know. Again, muchdepends on our client's needs and what level the informationcomes from.""Okay, you check," said Magid, "but my guy is very high up inSyria."So the two men agreed to meet again in two days. Mark, stillplaying a cool hand, told Magid that Syria was of some interest."It's not our top priority," he told the Arab, "but it could beprofitable if the information is really good."A day earlier, however, Magid had already called his brother to tellhim he'd got something important for him and that he shouldcome to Copenhagen even sooner. Jadid readily agreed.

He did not let on that he knew Jadid'sposition, but asked a series of questions about the sort ofinformation he could expect from him so that he could assesswhat his company's offer would be. Mark spoke about militarymatters, but mixed in considerable nonmilitary information todisguise his focus. After a few negotiating sessions — eachfollowed by reports to the safe house — Mark offered a $30,000finder's fee to Magid, $20,000 a month for Jadid, plus 10 percent,or $2,000 a month for Magid. The first six months would be paidin advance, deposited in a Copenhagen bank account Mark wouldset up for Jadid. If Jadid came out of Syria after that time withmore information, then he'd be paid for the next six months, andso on.The next step was to teach Jadid how to write secret letters usinga special chemically treated pencil. He would send theminformation by this means on the back of his regular letters to hisbrother.They offered to give Jadid the working materials to take back toSyria with him, but he refused, so they agreed to have it all sent toDamascus. "You people really do work like an intelligence agency,"he said at one point."Definitely," replied Mark. "We even employ ex-intelligence people.The difference is, we're in the game to make money. We only shareour information with people who are willing to pay for it and use itfor investment purposes."Mark then had to go over the questions with Jadid. Many oddballquestions were thrown in: real-estate values and changes ingovernment departments, for example, always to camouflage thequestionnaire so that military questions would not dominate. Afterseveral trial runs with the special pencil, and assurances he'd becontacted and told where to pick up the list of questions inDamascus, Jadid seemed satisfied that everything was in order.Throughout the exercise, the Mossad suspected that both brothersknew they were working for Israel, but the game was kept up inany event. However, because of their suspicions, security for thekatsa was upgraded.
