242 BY WAY OF DECEPTIONthe military safe, access he'd used to "borrow" $15,000 to buy anew car. Though he had planned to repay the "loan" from hisregular monthly Mossad check, he hadn't counted on a surpriseaudit.Fortunately for Haled, the Mossad knew about the audit. But justto be safe, his katsa called Haled on his private number at theembassy, using his regular code name and message to set up ameeting. Haled would know that the signal meant meeting at acertain restaurant — changed regularly to avoid detection — at aprearranged time. He would know that he must wait there 15minutes; if his katsa didn't show, that was the signal to phone acertain number. If there was no answer, it meant he was to go toanother prearranged meeting spot — almost always a restaurant. But if Haled was being tailed, or there was any reason to avoideither meeting place, the katsa would answer the phone call andgive him separate instructions. In this case, there was no problem with the first restaurant: thekatsa met Haled, told him a team <strong>of</strong> auditors was coming the nextday, and left when Haled assured him there was nothing to worryabout. Or so he thought .An hour later, with the katsa back in the safe house writing hisreport, Haled phoned the special number he'd been given. Thoughhe didn't know it, he was calling a number inside the Israeliembassy (each embassy has several "unlisted" lines). His messagein code would have been something like: "Michael is callingAlbert." When the man taking the call punched the code into hiscomputer, it showed the request for an emergency meeting. Haled,a colonel by rank, had never used the emergency code in his threeyears on the Mossad payroll; according to Israel's psychologicalreports on him, he was extremely stable. Something was obviouslywrong.Since they knew Haled's katsa was still in the safe house, a bodelwas sent to him. After making sure he wasn't being followed, thebodel phoned the safe house with a coded message, such as: "I'llmeet you at Jack's place in 15 minutes." Jack's place might be aparticular pay phone arranged in advance.
