7HairpieceIT WAS OCTOBER 27, 1984. My colleagues and I had just finishedour term as junior katsas, or trainees, in the headquartersbuilding, and were about to enter the operational intelligenceofficers' course back at the Academy. This time, we would beworking in a large room on the second floor of the main building. The original group of 15 had dropped to 12, but went back upagain with the addition of three men left over from previouscourses, where too few trainees had been left to make finishing thecourse worthwhile. Our three new colleagues were Oded L., PinhasM., and Yegal A.There were other changes, too. Araleh Sherf had left as head of theAcademy to take over the Tsafririm, or "morning breeze,"department and had been replaced by David Arbel, former head ofthe Paris office but late of the infamous Lillehammer affair — theone who had told all to local authorities. Shai Kauly was stillthere, but Oren Riff had been transferred to the office of the headof the Mossad. Our new course leader was Itsik E.,* another katsawith a less than distinguished career — one of the two menoverheard by the PLO speaking Hebrew at Orly airport afterloading a valuable agent on a flight to Rome.Arbel, a white-haired, short, timid, and bespectacled man,* See PROLOGUE: OPERATION SPHINX137
