BY WAY OF DECEPTION 173I went to Washington for a few days, in an attempt to contactMossad liaison. But I wasn't successful. Nobody would come onthe line, and I didn't want to say where I was. Then Bella flew toWashington, while our two daughters flew to Montreal. We settledfinally in Ottawa.* * *I'm not sure my entire problem was only talking. They would haveused me as a scapegoat and left me, anyway. It's one of thosethings.But remember that Palestinian in Cyprus who told me about thetrick? He said something else even more shocking. It was all afake. All they were doing was getting information — getting Israelisto talk freely, as they do when there is no one else around. When Imentioned this to several people in the office, they told me I wascrazy, that it couldn't be, and that this couldn't get out because itwould cause havoc. I asked them what they were talking about.We should warn people, I said. But they were adamant.The Palestinian probably opened up to me because he knew it waslate the night before the operation; we were in a hotel bar inLarnaca, and what was I going to do, anyway? Incidentally, thecombatant in Tripoli did see the PLO heavyweights board theprivate jet. What he did not see was them getting off, with theplane being reloaded behind a hangar en route to its take-offposition.They should have let me pursue a whole operation with that Arab.Obviously he knew things. But I never got the chance. If this hadbeen a normal situation, since I was a katsa, after my phone callthey shouldn't have let personal information interfere. We couldhave saved ourselves some embarrassment and even doubletrickedthe other side.We should have seen it coming. These were the men who werescared shitless of us. Yet we thought five of them would board aplane together? These were men who normally hid
174 BY WAY OF DECEPTIONunder rocks. They were sophisticated, experienced. We shouldhave known it was a trick. The Mossad didn't need somemiddleman in Cyprus to pass a message, either. What theyneeded was a scapegoat. And that's what I turned out to be.My problems had begun when I was a cadet, but the instructorsapparently hoped I would grow out of it and adapt better to thesystem. I was good at the job and they had made a big investmentin me. Not everyone was against me, either, so it took some time toreach the stage where it was finally decided that I was moretrouble than I was worth. My problems with Jerry are likely whatbrought matters to a head. Obviously he had a powerful horseworking for him. And against me.Clearly the Mossad does not appreciate people who question thesystem, or those who operate it. They prefer people who obedientlyaccept it as is and even use it to their own advantage. As long asthey don't rock the boat, no one seems to care.Even so, I learned enough during my extensive training period andbrief career as a katsa to keep a diary and collect extensiveinformation on numerous Mossad operations.Many of the training courses were taught by those who hadcarried out various Mossad operations. The trainees studied theseoperations in minute detail, reenacting them, having every detailexplained. In addition, my open access to the Mossad computerallowed me to build up a vast knowledge of the organization andits activities, many of which you are now going to read about, andmuch of it for the first time.
