BY WAY OF DECEPTION 16Two days later, Halim met with his new business associates inParis. Itsik, much pushier than Donovan, wanted a layout of theIraqi plant along with details on its location, capacity, and preciseconstruction timetable.Halim at first complied, with no apparent problems. The twoIsraelis taught him how to photocopy using a "paper paper," aspecial paper that is simply placed on top of a document to becopied, with a book or other object left sitting on it for severalhours. "I'm sorry. You've been such a good friend. But I was taken in by the money. My wife always wants me to earn more, to better myself. I saw thechance. I was so selfish and so stupid. Please forgive me. I needyour help."Donovan was magnanimous about it all, telling Halim, "That'sbusiness." But he went on to suggest that the Germans might, inreality, be U.S. CIA men. Halim was stunned."I've given them everything I have," he said, much to Ran's delight."Still, they push me for more.""Let me think about this," said Donovan. "I know some
