BY WAY OF DECEPTION 61Kauly and Ran S. Kauly told us, "When you work in gatheringintelligence, you're not a Victor or a Heim or a Yosy, you're akatsa. Most of our recruiting is done under cover. You don't walkup to a guy and say, 'Hi, I'm with Israel's intelligence and I wantyou to give me information for which I will give you money.'"You work under cover. Tsvi faced thekatsa and talked nonstop for 20 minutes, blurting out everythinghe knew about his cover city and profession. The katsa didn't sayanything. Back in the classroom, we laughed our heads off. Andwhen he'd finished, he came back to the class and went, "Ah, it'sover." He was happy. We were all brought up in the military where you have a sense ofloyalty to your friends, so when Kauly first asked us
