All of thiswould be drawn with special markers on the Plexiglas over themaps.The cadets would report, usually the next morning, and after all15 had finished, we'd be told who was and who wasn't followed.It was just as important to know that you weren't followed as itwas to know that you were. If you think you were followed, butyou weren't, you can't proceed. In Europe, for example, if a katsasaid he was followed, the station would cease to operate for amonth or two until it could be checked out. It's dangerous to sayyou were followed, because it naturally raises the question of whowould be following you, and why.We were also told that the houses where we lived were safehouses. We had to make sure we were not followed when we lefthome in the morning or returned at night. For all intents andpurposes, the Academy was a station and our own homes werethe safe houses.A route was divided into two main parts. You usually planned iton a map. You'd leave a place and act completely naturally. You'dlook for vantage points — a place where you had a reason to be,and from where you could see the place you came from butnobody could see you. Suppose a dentist was on the third floor ofa building. On that floor was a window overlooking the street youcame from. If you'd done a little zigzag to get there, you'd notice ifsomebody was following you. From that window, you'd see himlook and then wait.If I was being followed by a team and I'd come out of a hotel, I'd beboxed in. So I'd walk briskly in a straight line for five minutes, tostring out their box. Then I'd do a zigzag into a building, take alook from my vantage point, and watch them getting reorganized.What I had to do next was break any coincidence factor. So I'd geton a bus, ride to another section of town, and do it again. I'd do itvery slowly to give them a chance to join me.One thing you never wanted to do if you were being fol-
BY WAY OF DECEPTION 65lowed was to lose them. If you did, how could you verify it? So,assuming they turned up again, so that I'd know I was beingfollowed, I'd immediately stop all planned activities. I might just goto a movie — but as far as our practices were concerned at thisstage, I'd be done.Each of us would carry a little hat in our pocket, and when wewere positive we were being followed, we'd put on the hat. Thenwe'd walk to a phone, dial a number, say who we were, and reportthat we were being followed — or not — and go home. We'd oftenmeet later at somebody's house to discuss the situation.In the entire period of training, I made only one mistake. I oncesaid I was being followed when I wasn't. That was because one ofthe other cadets copied my route plan and followed me by just fiveminutes. I saw the team following him and I thought they werefollowing me. But he didn't see them following him.By this time, the class had split up into several cliques, includingmine. You felt the vulnerability within the course. You were alwaysopen to attack, and in the classroom, that applied to everybody.But afterward we'd start meeting in groups of three or four,offering one another advice and even starting to "recruit" the staffto help our cliques. We were practicing what we were taught onthe people who were teaching us.At this stage, the instructors were beginning to explain theapplication of what had been learned."Now that you've learned how to protect yourselves, you'relearning to recruit," they told us. "You come to a place verifyingyou're clean, then start to recruit, and after, you write the reportwith the NAKA you've learned. And you know how to useinformation from the constant pounding of data you've received."I remember Mousa saying, "At this point, my friends, you arestarting to crack the shell of the egg."The yolk was just around the corner.
