As theonly Arabic-speaking man there, he understands the messages,but sends the tapes to Israel for translation (everything goesthrough a liaison code-named "Hombre" in the Mossad's openstation in Copenhagen). This information is not always sharedwith Denmark when the transcripts, <strong>of</strong>ten heavily edited, arereturned. The original tapes are not returned by the Mossad.Clearly the Mossad does not hold the Danes in high esteem. Theycall them fertsalach, the Hebrew term for a small burst <strong>of</strong> gas, afart. They tell the Mossad everything they do. But the Mossaddoesn't let anybody in on its secrets.Normally, checking 40 names through the Mossad computerwould take about an hour. But it happened to be Ami's first timedealing with the Danes, so he began by calling up the DCSSinformation on his computer terminal. Up popped a letternumbered 4647, marked "secret," a detailed description <strong>of</strong> theDanish security service's functions, personnel, and even someoperations.Once every three years, Danish intelligence <strong>of</strong>ficials go to Israel fora seminar conducted by the Mossad to discuss the latestdevelopments in terrorist activities and anti-terrorism techniques.Through this relationship, Israel receives a complete picture <strong>of</strong> the500-strong Palestinian community in Denmark and receives "totalcooperation on subject <strong>of</strong> dance (following people) coordinatedwhen needed with Purple."The letter listed Henning Fode, then 38, as head <strong>of</strong> DCSS,appointed in November 1984 and scheduled to visit Israel in thefall <strong>of</strong> 1985. Michael Lyngbo was second-in-command, andalthough he lacked intelligence experience, he handled the Sovietbloc for the organization. Paul Moza Hanson was legal adviser toFode, the Mossad's contact man, who was scheduled to finish histerm shortly.
