232 BY WAY OF DECEPTIONheadquarters monitoring all Arabic and Palestinian-relatedmessages coming into their listening department — anextraordinary arrangement for a foreign intelligence service. As theonly Arabic-speaking man there, he understands the messages,but sends the tapes to Israel for translation (everything goesthrough a liaison code-named "Hombre" in the Mossad's openstation in Copenhagen). This information is not always sharedwith Denmark when the transcripts, often heavily edited, arereturned. The original tapes are not returned by the Mossad.Clearly the Mossad does not hold the Danes in high esteem. Theycall them fertsalach, the Hebrew term for a small burst of gas, afart. They tell the Mossad everything they do. But the Mossaddoesn't let anybody in on its secrets.Normally, checking 40 names through the Mossad computerwould take about an hour. But it happened to be Ami's first timedealing with the Danes, so he began by calling up the DCSSinformation on his computer terminal. Up popped a letternumbered 4647, marked "secret," a detailed description of theDanish security service's functions, personnel, and even someoperations.Once every three years, Danish intelligence officials go to Israel fora seminar conducted by the Mossad to discuss the latestdevelopments in terrorist activities and anti-terrorism techniques.Through this relationship, Israel receives a complete picture of the500-strong Palestinian community in Denmark and receives "totalcooperation on subject of dance (following people) coordinatedwhen needed with Purple."The letter listed Henning Fode, then 38, as head of DCSS,appointed in November 1984 and scheduled to visit Israel in thefall of 1985. Michael Lyngbo was second-in-command, andalthough he lacked intelligence experience, he handled the Sovietbloc for the organization. Paul Moza Hanson was legal adviser toFode, the Mossad's contact man, who was scheduled to finish histerm shortly. He, too, had taken part in the last seminar on terrorism heldin Israel.(In fact, the Mossad holds a series of such seminars, inviting oneintelligence service at a time, and consequently generatingvaluable contacts while perpetuating the notion that noorganization deals with terrorism better than they do.)Another document on Ami's computer screen showed the fullname of Denmark's overall intelligence service: PolitietsEfterretingsjtneste Politistatonen (PEP). It listed a series ofdepartments.Telephone tapping comes under Department S: in an August 25,1982, document, the Danes had told Hombre they were planninga new computer system and could afford to give the Mossad 60"listenings" (60 locations where they actually installed listeningdevices for the Mossad). They had also installed a number oflistening devices in public telephones "at our (Mossad) suggestionin areas known to be sensitive to subversive activities."The head of service had to hold the rank of what was calleddetective inspector a district-attorney level in Israel. The Mossadreport went on to complain that their following unit was of poorquality: "Their people are easy to detect. They do not blend in well,probably due to high rotation of personnel in that unit . . . abouttwo years and they go to different jobs."The police were responsible for recruiting people for the service,but that was difficult to do since there was little room forpromotion. On July 25, 1982, Hombre asked about a NorthKorean secret operation in Denmark, but was told it was beingdone for the Americans, so "don't ask again."Still searching his computer for more information, Ami pulled up asheet called "Purple B," which detailed the Danish DefenseIntelligence Service (DDIS), the intelligence arm of the Danishmilitary under direct orders from the head of the army and thedefense minister. The service is structured into four units:management, listening, research, and gathering.For NATO, its job is covering Poland and East Germany and themovement of Soviet ships in the Baltic, with the help
