Haled had beenrecruited by the Mossad in an earlier operation and was sellingthem the embassy code, which changed every month. So it wasthey could read all messages to and from Syrian embassiesworldwide.One <strong>of</strong> those messages tipped them <strong>of</strong>f that Jadid was scheduledto be part <strong>of</strong> the audit team. But another message, sent fromDamascus to Beirut, said Jadid would be arrested for smugglingheroin out <strong>of</strong> the country. The message had serious ramificationsfor both Jadid and Haled.The Mossad had to get a message to Jadid. With only three daysleft before the bust was planned, they sent a combatant in, posingas an English tourist. From his hotel room, the man phonedJadid, telling him simply that there had been a hitch and he wasnot to go to the planned meeting with the dealers or pick up theshipment. It would be delivered to him after he arrived at hisdestination in Holland.When the dealers did arrive for the meeting, the police were not farbehind, and made several arrests. Now Jadid was wanted by thedope dealers, too: they naturally assumed he had set them up.At the time, Jadid knew nothing about all this. So when he arrivedin Holland and was still not contacted about the deal, he calledSyria to find out what had happened. It was then he learned thathe was suspected by both the government and the dope dealersand had best not return home. So it was that after pumping himfor any more information he had — it was considerable — theMossad set him up with a new identity and relocated him inDenmark, where he still lives.* * *In London, Haled was a different story. When auditors arrive, theyput a black-out order on an embassy, meaning no communicationis allowed with other embassies until it is lifted. As with that <strong>of</strong>most countries, the Syrians' military side was an operationseparate from the diplomatic side <strong>of</strong> the embassy.
