82 BY WAY OF DECEPTIONgo about it? He took us through watching the building, casing it,checking the traffic patterns, police movements, danger spots —not to spend too much time standing in front of a bank, forinstance — how to plan a getaway, who would go in, signaling ofall sorts. Then came more lessons on secret communications, divided intosending and receiving. Sent from the Mossad, communicationscould be by radio, letter, telephone, dead- letter drop, or actualmeetings. Each agent with a radio was given a certain time eachday that his message would be broadcast over a special nonstopstation that is now computerized; for example, "This is forCharlie," then a code of letters in groups of five. The messagechanged only once a week to give the agent a chance to hear it.Agents had a radio and a fixed antenna, usually at their home orplace of business.Another special method of communication was through what iscalled a floater, a little microfilm attached to the inside of anenvelope. The agent would rip the envelope and tip the microfilminto a glass of water. He'd then stick it on the outside of the glassand, by using a magnifying glass, read the message.Going the other way, agents could contact their katsas bytelephone, telex, letters, special-ink letters, meetings, or burstcommunications, a system whereby very short bursts ofinformation are transmitted on a specific frequency. It's difficult totrack, and every time an agent uses it, he does so with a differentcrystal, never repeating the same frequency. Frequency changesfollow a predetermined order. The idea was to make communication as simple as possible. Butthe longer an agent was in a target country, the more informationhe had — and the more sophisticated the equipment he needed. That can be a problem, since such equipment is that much moredangerous to be caught with. The agent has to be taught how touse this equipment, and the more he's taught the more nervoushe becomes. To instill more oomph in our Zionism, the class spent one full dayvisiting the House of the Diaspora, at the University of Tel Aviv, amuseum that contains models of synagogues
