Whenever somebody knocked on the officedoor, I was made to hide under the table. That happened aboutthree times. Finally, this man said to me, "No hard feelings. Therewas a misunderstanding."He returned my clothes and said they'd take me back to wherethey'd picked me up. They blindfolded me again and put me in thecar, but just as the driver started up the engine, somebodyshouted, "Wait a minute! Bring him back! We checked his addressand there's nothing there.""I don't know what you're talking about," I said, but they put meback in the bathroom.Another 20 minutes passed, then they took me back down to theoffice and said, "Sorry, there's been a mistake!" They dropped meat the Country Club, apologized again, and drove away.On the fourth morning of that first week, we were all called into aroom, one at a time, for a conversation.They asked, "What do you think? Do you think you weresuccessful?"I said, "I don't know. I don't know what you want of me. You toldme to do the best I could and I did." Some of them were in therefor 20 minutes. I was there four or five minutes. At the end theysaid, "Thank you. We'll call you."Two weeks later, they did. I was ordered to report to the office earlythe next morning.I was in. Now the real test was about to begin.
2School DaysIN ISRAEL, SEVERAL GROUPS of people believe the country is inconstant danger. A strong army doesn't guarantee safety. Ibelieved that then.You know there is this immense need for security and you knowthere is an organization called the Mossad. It doesn't officially existin Israel, yet everyone knows about it. It's the epitome, the top ofthe heap. You realize it's a very secretive organization, and onceyou're called in, you do what you are told because you believe thatbehind it is a form of super magic that will be explained to you indue course.Growing up in Israel, this becomes ingrained. You start by going tothe youth brigades. I was trained in shooting there, and at 14,finished second in Israel in target shooting. Using a sniper'sShtutser rifle, I scored 192 of a possible 200 points, four pointsbehind the overall winner.I'd spent quite a few years in the army, too. So I knew — orthought I knew — what I was getting into.Not every Israeli will go blindly forward, of course, but those peoplewho look for Mossad recruits, those who do all the psychologicaltesting, find people who are willing, and at that stage it's assumedyou will do as you're told. If you ask questions, it could bog downa whole operation later on.At the time, I was a member of the Labor Party in Herzlia and wasfairly active. My ideas were relatively liberal, so from that point on,I was in constant conflict between my be-
