BY WAY OF DECEPTION 141But that was just my opinion, and it didn't help much to expressit.Our weekly "sports" program also changed dramatically, to includea new sport potentially hazardous to our health. We would go to abuilding in a military camp near Herzlia and run up and down thestairs firing live bullets and being shot at by a machine withwooden bullets that hurt if they hit you at close range. The ideawas to practice ducking and shooting, getting used to your gunand exercising your body at the same time.We also practiced rappelling — coming down the side of a buildingby rope, pushing yourself off, dropping a bit, pushing off again, allthe way to the ground. And we practiced descending from ahelicopter by rope, plus other commando-style exercises such asthe "jump and shoot" technique of firing at a hijacker inside a bus.Another segment of the course was called "recruiting an agentwith a friendly agency," that is, mutual recruitment, say with theCIA. The lecturer began by saying that was the purpose of thelecture. "How is it done?" he would ask, then quickly reply, "It'snot. We don't do that. We will assist them if they have a subjectand make it look like it's mutual, but if we can do it alone, wewill."He taught us how to steal an agent from a friendly agency bystarting him off as a mutual operation, then eventually changinghis country of operation, giving him separate instructions andnotifying the friendly agency of a loss of contact with the mutualagent. It was a simple procedure. I'd meet him and, if he wasperceived as worth it, whisk him off and double his pay. Then he'dbe our agent, what we called "blue and white," the colors of Israel'sflag.One particularly intriguing aspect of the course was a moviecalled, "A President on the Crosshairs," a detailed study of theNovember 22, 1963, assassination of John F. Kennedy. TheMossad theory was that the killers — Mafiosa hit men, not LeeHarvey Oswald — actually wanted to murder then Texas governorJohn Connally, who was in the car with JFK but was onlywounded. Oswald was seen as a dupe in

The Mossad believed thatthe official version of the assassination was pure, unadulteratedhokum. To test their theory, they did a simulation exercise of thepresidential cavalcade to see if expert marksmen with far betterequipment than Oswald's could hit a moving target from therecorded distance of 88 yards. They couldn't.It would have been the perfect cover. If Connally had been killed,everyone would have assumed it was an attempt on JFK. If they'dwanted to get Kennedy, they could have got him anywhere. Asingle bullet is supposed to have gone through the back ofKennedy's head, out his chest, and into Connally. If you look atthe film, you'll see those points were not aligned. If ever a bulletcould do the Waltzing Matilda, that was it.The Mossad had every film taken of the Dallas assassination,pictures of the area, the topography, aerial photographs,everything. Using mannequins, they duplicated the presidentialcavalcade over and over again. Professionals will do a job in thesame way. If I'm going to use a high- powered rifle, there are veryfew places I'd work from, and ideally I'd want a place where I heldthe target for the longest possible time, where I could get closest toit, but still create the least disturbance. Based on that, we pickeda few likely places, and we had more than one person doing theshooting from more than one angle.Oswald had used a mail-order, bolt-action, clip-fed 6.5 mmMannlicher-Carcano rifle, with a four-power telescopic sight. He'dbought it through a catalogue for $21.45. He also had a .38 Smith& Wesson revolver. It was never determined whether he had firedtwo rounds or three, but he used regular military full-jacketedcartridges with a muzzle velocity of 2,165 feet per second.During the simulation exercise, the Mossad, using better, morepowerful equipment, would aim their rifles, which were set up ontripods, and when the moment came they'd say "bang" over theloudspeakers and a laser direction-finder would show where thepeople in the car would have been
