BY WAY OF DECEPTION 159ton Hotel entrance. As it turned out, it was only three stalls away,in clear view of the old Sheraton's doorman.Jerry's assignment was to talk to the contact in the upper lobby atthe Grand Beach, while sitting in a position where he could see meenter with the attaché case and carry it across the lobby to theelevators. When photos of the documents had been taken in thehotel room, everything was to be returned, the case wiped clean offingerprints, and I would take it back out to the car. Once the casewas back in the trunk, I would signal Arik who in turn wouldsignal Jerry, and he could then let the man go. All this activity wasgoing on without the contact's knowledge. The only hitch in the whole exercise was that the car was toovisible to the doorman. And so, I asked Arik if he had a wallet, toldhim to take everything out of it, except some cash which he couldleave sticking out, then go up and tell the doorman he'd found itand wanted it taken to the lost and found. That way, he'd beelsewhere while I removed the case from the car trunk.By the time I came back downstairs, Arik already knew thedoorman's name, so he made an urgent phone call to him. Whilethe doorman went inside to take his call, I put the case back intothe trunk. Two hours later we all met back in the apartment. Everyone wasquiet, but there didn't seem to be a problem. Soon Itsik and ShaiKauly entered. We all gave a full description of what hadhappened, but when everyone had finished, Jerry turned to Itsikand said, "I want to file a complaint about Vic's behavior."I was dumbfounded. I had exceeded what was expected of me, andhere was this little twit filing a complaint. But Jerry continued. "When Victor was working for the Smerfs inKaisarut, he hosted some Africans in this hotel. By doing thisexercise in a hotel where he's known, he has endangered theentire operation.""Wait a minute," I said. "We've done exercises in every bloody hotelin town. Anyway, hypothetically, for purposes of this exercise weare now in Paris, and I'm not known in any hotels in Paris."
