I droveover for it in a Suburu, but when I got to the airport I wasastounded to find a large, 61/2 x 10 x 5-foot parcel all wrapped inplastic, with many small packages inside — far too large for thecar. So I called for a truck to collect it, take it to the office forrepackaging, and send it to Panama.I asked Amy Yaar what was in the packages."It's none of your business," said Yaar. "Just get on with it."At the airport, the parcel wasn't loaded on a Panamanian plane, asI had been told it would, but on an Israeli air force plane. I saidthere must be some mistake. They said, "No, no. The plane is onloan to Panama."It was a Hercules transport carrier. When I returned to the office Icomplained. I knew what we were sending. I wasn't that stupid.We weren't middlemen for weapons from the Far East. It couldn'thave been anything else but drugs. So I asked why we had to usean Israeli airplane, and was told that the guy running thePanamanian air force was Harari, so what was the problem?I was heard talking at lunch and in the office, complaining aboutwhy we were supporting Harari in this sort of activity. There was acomplaint-box system inside the office where you could complainby computer and it would go to internal security. I complainedformally. The problem with the system is that if you file acomplaint, high-ranking officials had access to it; so Harari wouldhave found out about it.It was the straw that broke the camel's back. My action hit a weakspot with Harari. He didn't like me to begin with, because we hada history.* * *At the time there was a case unfolding that resulted in my beingsent to Cyprus. I wasn't really supposed to go, but Itsik wanted meto. I was as surprised that he wanted me to go abroad as I wasexcited.My task was to pose as the middleman in an operation that wasalready in motion. I knew little about the details, but wassupposed to meet a man and set up a system

He was Europeanand in Cyprus liaising with the PLO and making arms deals at thesame time. The idea was to nip all this in the bud. The man'sbuyers were arms dealers and we figured if we could get them,they'd think the militant PLO factions had turned them in.I had to make sure the men involved would come to a certainrendezvous point in Brussels to receive the goods. The deal wasset for Brussels because the explosives and detonators were sentfrom Mossad headquarters in Tel Aviv to European headquartersin Brussels through the diplomatic pouch. Because of its status,Brussels' diplomatic pouch was frequently very large.The buyers were equipment merchants from Belgium andHolland. The idea was to tie them in, get an investigation going bythe police in their own countries, and let them take it from there.Naturally, the police wanted proof. The Mossad, unknown to thepolice, were supplying the proof.Part of the scheme involved using Michel, because of his perfectFrench, to phone in tips to the police over a period of time,building up to the point where the deliveries would actually bemade.I was staying at the Sun Hall Hotel overlooking the harbor inLarnaca. The equipment was to be transferred to Belgium andplaced in a car. I had a set of keys to give to one of the men inCyprus, telling them they'd be notified exactly when and where topick up the car. They wanted to meet me on Butterfly Hill, but Iinsisted on handing over the keys at my hotel.The men were caught red-handed by Belgian police as theyapproached the car, including the man I had given the keys to, onFebruary 2, 1986. More than 200 pounds of plastic explosives and200 or 300 detonators were confiscated.After that, I was ready to go home. I didn't realize I had actuallybeen sent to Cyprus for another purpose — as part of an operationI was slightly familiar with from working on the office computer.
