They could be anywhere in the airport itself, the nearbyhangars, or in the fields surrounding the airport.For his part as he was patrolling the airport, Kauly ran into aRome-based katsa and asked where the Mossad liaison peoplewere. (They were the ones who would notify the Italian police whenneeded, not the katsas themselves.)"What liaison?" the man replied."You mean they aren't here!" Kauly was incredulous. "No," said theRome katsa.Kauly immediately called the liaison man in Rome and told him tocall Vivani and tell him what was going on. "Pull whatever stringsare necessary. We've got to get reinforcements out here."It seemed more likely the terrorists would be outside the perimeterof the airport within missile range of Meir's plane, since thereproved to be very few good hiding spots on airport grounds. Still,they searched everywhere, soon joined by Adaglio Malti of Italianintelligence.Malti had no idea the place was full of Mossad officers. He wasthere because of a tip from the Rome liaison officer that, based onreliable information received, the PLO was planning to embarrassthe Italians by shooting down Meir's plane over the airport withRussian-made missiles. (That message would have been approvedfirst by liaison command in Tel Aviv before being transferred to theItalians.)* * *By this time, the terrorists had split into two groups. One, withfour missiles, went to the south of the airport, and the other, witheight, to the north. The fact that two of the 14 "cakes" would beunaccounted for after the operation

But at that time, the northerngroup set up two missiles next to their Fiat van in a field.However, it wasn't long before a Mossad security man combing thearea noticed them. He shouted. They opened fire. The scene wasone of great confusion. The Italian police arrived, and the Mossadman — not expecting them, since it was Kauly who had calledthem, nor wanting them to see him ran off. In the commotion, oneof the terrorists tried to get away, but Mossad officers who hadbeen observing the action soon caught up to him, tied him up,threw him into a car, and spirited him swiftly away to an airportstorage shed.Under brutal and persistent beating, the terrorist confessed thatthey'd planned to kill Golda Meir, and he boasted, "There isnothing you can do about it.""What do you mean nothing we can do? We got you!" an officerreplied, and the beating continued.Kauly had, meanwhile, heard over his walkie-talkie that a prisonerhad been taken. He immediately made his way to the storageshed. The officers told Kauly they had captured this terrorist, andthe Italians had nabbed some more, along with either nine or 10missiles.But Kauly remembered the telephone call from Brussels abouttaking "all 14 cakes." Not only did the Mossad still have a problem,only 30 minutes remained until Meir's plane landed. There mustbe more missiles. But where?By this time, the prisoner was unconscious. Kauly threw waterover him."It's finished for you," Kauly told him. "You blew it this time. She'slanding in four minutes. There's nothing you can do about it,""Your prime minister is dead," the terrorist taunted his captors."You didn't get us all."Kauly's worst fears were confirmed. Somewhere out there was aSoviet-made missile with Golda Meir's name on it.At that, a security man smashed the terrorist unconscious. Whenthey'd caught him, he'd been carrying an explosive device, called a"bouncing Betty," often used by
