Yeah, sure.I was next assigned to the Tsomet (or Meluckah) department andput on the Benelux desk, where part of my job was approvingDanish visa applications.In Tsomet, the desk is there to service the station, not to instructit. The head of a station in Tsomet is the boss and, in most cases,equals the rank of the head of the branch he's under. (This is theopposite of Kaisarut, where I had just been working. There,decisions are taken at the desk and the branches, so that theliaison station head in London, for example, is the directsubordinate of the head of the London desk in Tel Aviv, which hastotal control.)The first branch of Tsomet had several desks. One, called theBenelux desk, handled Belgium, The Netherlands, Luxembourg,and also Scandinavia (with stations in Brussels and Copenhagen);then there were the French and the British desks, with stations inLondon, Paris, and Marseille.There was also a second major branch with the Italian desk, andstations in Rome and Milan; the German and Austrian desk, thenwith a station in Hamburg (changed later to Berlin); and a jumperdesk, called the Israeli station, in Tel Aviv, with katsas jumping toGreece, Turkey, Egypt, and Spain, when needed.The head of a station had the rank of the head of a branch andcould overrule him if need be, then go directly to the head ofdepartment. The structure was flawed, because if his case failedwith the head of department, he could still turn to the head ofEurope, in Brussels. As a field command, that would override eventhe head of department. It became a constant struggle, and withevery change in personnel there, the power base shifted.There was no such thing as orders in the Mossad. It was nicer thatway. First, they didn't want to make anybody angry, and then,nobody really had to do what you asked them to do. Most peoplehad a horse or two in the system —

So there was a constant battletrying to guess who had whom and why.When information came in on the computer from an agent, whowas then assistant air attaché at the Syrian embassy in Paris, thatthe head of the Syrian air force (who was also head of theirintelligence) would be coming to Europe to buy some expensivefurniture, headquarters thought immediately of creatingsomething that could "talk," because of communicationsequipment planted inside it.The computer was asked to find all available furniture sayanim. Aplan would be devised to create a speaking table for the renovatedoffices at Syrian air-force headquarters. A katsa from the Londonstation was sent to Paris to run the show, though the Mossadknew the general would be buying his furniture in Belgium, notFrance. (They did not know why.)Prior to the general's arrival, the London katsa was set up inbusiness as someone who could get you any piece of furniture youwanted, but cheaper. We knew the general himself was not lookingfor bargains. He was rich and, anyway, would get cash throughthe embassy, and so pay in cash. The idea was not to get to him,but to the aide who would actually do the purchasing. We had lessthan three weeks to accomplish it.We contacted a well-known interior designer, a sayan, andobtained photos of his work, putting together in a couple of days abrochure for a company that delivered quality furniture at goodprices. We would use a three-point plan to approach the general'saide. First, we would try to reach him directly. Give him thebrochure, see if he'd bite and buy the furniture directly from theMossad. If that didn't work, we would find out where he boughtthe furniture and arrange to handle the delivery. The next step, ifall else failed, was to hijack the furniture.We knew what hotel the general was staying at in Brussels andthat he'd be at the hotel with his bodyguards for three days beforegoing off to Paris. We followed the general and his aide from storeto store, watching the aide making notes.
