162 BY WAY OF DECEPTION"I'm really sorry," I said when the door was opened. "I wentupstairs to meet Dina, but she wasn't in. Now I've dropped thisbottle. Do you have something I can clean it up with?"The man and his guest both helped. I suggested we might as wellshare the other bottle, and I stayed there for two hours, getting toknow both their life histories. Mission accomplished. In the meantime, the team in the Haifa apartment wasconcentrating on the UN peacekeeping troops, particularly theCanadians. Canadians were a great target. They were friendly. They tended to be nice people. They felt in Israel as if they were ina Western country, so they were quite comfortable — a lot more sothan in an Arab country. I mean, if you're going to have fun, wherewould you go, Damascus? There were several Canadian duvshanim (literally honey pies, UNpeacekeeping forces paid to transport messages and packages)transferring packages back and forth over the borders for us. Twoexercises involved breaking into police stations, once at theheadquarters of Mador on Dizengoff Street in Tel Aviv, the othertime at the special investigative police headquarters in Jerusalem.A man named Zigel headed a large, special fraud investigative unitthere. One of the cases he was working on at the time was calledthe "Peach File" (Tik Afarsek in Hebrew). When we broke into the headquarters, we brought along an"expert with handles" who told us which files to take. The PeachFile turned out to be about an investigation involving a veteranreligious cabinet minister called Yosef Burg, one of the oldestmembers of parliament in Israel. Burg had been around so longwe used to tell a joke about three archaeologists, an American, aBrit, and an Israeli, who stumbled across a 3,000-year-oldEgyptian mummy. When they opened the tomb, the mummy wokeup and said to the American, "Where are you from?""America. It's a great country across the oceans. The mostpowerful country in the world.""I've never heard of it," the mummy said, turning to the Britisharchaeologist and going through the same routine.
