AcknowledgmentsThe Economics of Sanitation Initiative was conducted in Cambodia, China (Yunnan Province), Indonesia,Lao PDR, the Philippines and Vietnam. The study was led by the World Bank’s Water and SanitationProgram (WSP), with the contribution of WSP teams and consultants in each of the participatingcountries. The study took three years to complete, and has undergone several major peer review processes.Regionally, Guy Hutton (WSP Senior Water and Sanitation Economist and Task Team Leader) led thedevelopment of the concept and methodology for the ESI, the management and coordination of thecountry teams, provision of regional tools and templates, and report writing. BjÖrn Larsen contributedto the development of generic data collection tools and the health methodology. The Team Leader was Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Viet Anh, ViceDirector, IESE. The key staff involved in the study were: Hoang Thuy Lan (CEFACOM Director, socialscience expert), Phan Huyen Dan, Nguyen Hoang Yen (social science experts), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le ThuHoa, Le Thu Hang, Bui Nhung (economics experts), Nguyen Huu Tuyen, Nguyen Phuong Thao, TranKong Khanh (water and sanitation experts), and Dr. Hoang Van Minh (public health expert). In addition,over 40 contractors have been mobilized in field surveys in different provinces throughout the country. Thewater quality surveys have been conducted by laboratories at the National Center for Rural Water Supplyand Environmental Sanitation (NCERWASS), Hue National University, and National University in HoChi Minh City.Peer reviewers of the Vietnam report were Nguyen Le Thuy (Ministry of Planning and Investment),Christopher Trethewey (WSP), Assoc.
