Dr. Wight persists in the opinion that this yieldsone kind of true Gamboge in Ceylon. See Sot. Mag. comp. vol. ii.MAMMEA.Sepals 2, deciduous, equal. Petals 4-6, coriaceous, somewhatequal, deciduous. Style short; stigma 4-lobed, with emarginate lobes.Fruit pointed by the remains of the style, with a hard putamenand fleshy rind, 4- or by abortion 2-3-celled. Flowers solitary, white, sweet,1| inch in diameter. Fruit roundish, 3-7 inches in diameter; it is coveredwith a double rind, the outer leathery, 1 line thick, tough, brownishyellow, scored crosswise ;the inner thin, yellow, adhering firmly tothe flesh which is firm, bright yellow, with a pleasant singular taste and asweet aromatic smell. Skin and seeds very bitter and resinous. Barkabounds in a strong resinous gum, used by negroes for extractingchigoes from their feet. Melted down with a little lime juice anddropped into sores it is effectual in destroying maggots at the firstdressing. A bath of the bark hardens the soles of the feet like Mangrovebark. Lunan.CALOPHYLLUM.Flowers often by abortion polygamous. Sepals 2-4, petaloid,deciduous. Petals 2-4, alternating with the sepals. Staminausually numerous, or sometimes definite, more or less distinctly4-adelphous at the base or distinct : filaments short : anthersdehiscing longitudinally. Ovary ovate, 1 -celled ovule : solitary,attached to the bottom of the cell. Style longish, flexuose.Stigma large, peltate, irregularly lobed. Fruit drupaceous,1-celled, 1-seeded.
