This is theplant which furnished the principal part of the " Folia Malabathri " ofthe old pharmacologists, a mixture of the leaves of several species ofCinnamon, and once used as an aromatic substitute for Cinnamon.684. Leaves unusually large,elliptical-oblong, acuminate, obtuse at the base, 3- or shortly triplenerved,transversely netted ;the nerves confluent at the apex, on theunder side densely downy, as well as the petioles, branches, and spreadingterminal panicle. Blume. Bark a deep cinnamon brown, morebitter than Culilawan bark ;and the leaves when rubbed have a verysharp aromatic odour. Blume says the bark deserves the seriousattention of medical men, on account of its powerful effects in spasmodiccolic, and the after-pains attending parturition.CAMPHORA.Flowers hermaphrodite, panicled, naked. Calyx 6-cleft, papery,with a deciduous limb. Fertile stamens 9, in 3 rows ; theinner with 2, stalked compressed glands at the base ; anthers4-celled ;the outer turned inwards, the inner outwards. Threesterile stamens shaped like the first, placed in a whorl alternatingwith the stamens of the second row ; 3 others stalked, withan ovate glandular head. Fruit placed on the obconical base ofthe calyx. Leaves triple-nerved, glandular in the axils of theprincipal veins. Leaf buds scaly.332
