Flowerspink, arranged in a hemispherical, terminal head, surrounded by about4, ovate-acuminate, cordate leaves. Calyx hispid, with linear acuteciliated segments. Corolla 3 times as long as the calyx, ventricose,funnel-shaped, with 6 ovate triangular acute spreading segments whichare hairy at the points. Fruit oval, baccate, ofadeep orangeyellow, hairy, somewhat 3-sided, crowned with the calyx, containing 3cells and 3 hard bony, furrowed seeds. Bark of the root emetic andcathartic ;leaves diaphoretic. The efficacy impaired by age ; shouldbe kept in closely stopped jars, and renewed annually.SAMBUCUS.Limb of calyx 5-cleft.
