The expressed juice of the leaves is given in Tortola,as a cooling purgative to children, in doses of 1 or 2 table-spoonfuls.In the French West India Islands, it isemployed in decoction forclysters, and also as an anthelmintic. It has, moreover, some reputationfor promoting the menstrual discharge. In Brazil the fresh leavesbruised are applied to ulcers ; it is then called Urgerdo, or Jarbdo.*#* Premna integrifolia Linn., Volkameria inermis Linn, and someothers have been occasionally employed in medicine, on account of theirslightly bitter, and subastringent qualities,but they do not appear to be ofany importance.497
