Leaves ovate, thick, entire, glabrous, but coveredwith stinging hairs above, rufous and downy beneath. Stipules oblong,acute, villous. Flowers in a long terminal spike, yellow. Fruit greenand villous. According to Aublet the bark is employed as a febrifugein Guayana. Under the name of Chapara Manteca it is used in" infusionas an antidote to the bite of the rattle-snake. Cultivated on theAndes of Peru from 2000 to 9000 feet above the sea.Leaves alternate, 1^-2 inches long, membranous, flat, opaque, acuteat both ends, the apex almost mucronate ; quite entire, dark greenabove, pale beneath, 3-nerved in the middle, with fine connecting veins.Petiole 2-4 lines long, with a pair of intra-petiolaryovate-lanceolatebrown acute stipules, upon the back of the outside of which, indeed,the petiole is articulated, and from which the leaf readilyfalls away,leaving the branches scaly with the persistent stipules. Flowersnumerous, in fascicles from the branches where the leaves have fallenaway, bracteated. Peduncles about as long as the flower, sharplyangled. Calyx 5-cleft ; segments acute.
