Figure ES-0-2. Links among SDGs through their targets, based on scientists' assessmentSource: authors’ elaboration, visualizing the interdependencies described in the ICSU/ISSC 2015 report on the SDGs 5Notes: The thickness of the lines is an adjusted measure of the strength of interlinkages between goals. It denotes the number of links between two goals dividedby the sum of targets under the two goals. SDG17 on “means of implementation” (which links to all other goals) was excluded from the analysis.22Among the salient findings, the scientific coverage of theimpact of ocean ecosystem integrity on human well-beingis seen as being rather well developed with regard to thecreation of jobs and sustainable livelihoods but weak withregard to the evaluation of benefits derived from marineresources and ecosystem services. Also, the scientificcoverage of the impact of marine- and land-based humanactivities on oceans, seas and marine resources is betterdocumented than the feedback effects to human wellbeingfrom resource degradation. Areas for furtherresearch include a better understanding of cumulative andinteractive effects of different human activities as a basisfor integrative management strategies, and evaluatingproperly the consequences of human activities on oceanecosystems (e.g, geo-engineering and industrialdevelopment in extreme areas).
