Chapter 3. The Oceans, Seas, Marine Resources and HumanWell-being NexusThe present chapter aims to demonstrate the necessity ofusing an integrated approach when dealing with the“oceans, seas, marine resources 126 and human well-being”nexus at the global, regional, national and local levels. Itidentifies important inter-linkages between nexus areas(Section 3.1) and elaborates on important classes of threats(Section 3.2) (Figure 3-1). It examines the scientificcoverage of interlinkages and threats, lists illustrativescientific reports and indicates areas for further research.Furthermore, it documents selected case studies illustratinginter-linkages and the benefits of integrated approaches forimplementation (Section 3.3).of the scientific literature. It is written with the fullunderstanding that the First Global Integrated MarineAssessment (the World Ocean Assessment) 127 (see Box 3-2)will provide a much more detailed analysis of the topics athand. Annex 1 (Extended versions of Table 3-1, 3-3, 3-4)(available online 128 ) contains extended versions of thetables with supplementary illustrative scientific reports,case studies and contributions submitted by experts to givereaders the ability to gain a deeper insight into specifictopics. The scientific reports listed in this chapter andAnnex 1 (Extended versions of Table 3-1, 3-3, 3-4) are ofillustrative nature and are not meant to be exhaustive.The chapter is based on the knowledge and expertise ofcontributing scientists and UN staff and based on a reviewFigure 3-1.
