Studio Art: Studio Art concentration<br />
Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Fine Arts<br />
The Studio Art concentration‘s faculty <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional artists prepares students for<br />
careers in the visual arts (working as pr<strong>of</strong>essional artists, in galleries and museums, and<br />
as arts administrators) and to pursue graduate study in art education, studio art, art<br />
history or theory, arts administration, or art therapy. The Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Fine Arts program<br />
involves rigorous individual instruction tailored to each student‘s artistic and academic<br />
goals. Students take a range <strong>of</strong> art courses including Painting, Drawing, Figure Drawing,<br />
Ceramics, Sculpture: Glass/Mixed Media, Small Metals and Jewelry, and Printmaking.<br />
Students also have the opportunity to enroll in courses that emphasize marketability,<br />
including Arts Management, Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Practices and Portfolio, Museum as Medium,<br />
Computer Imaging, and Studio Art Internship. Additionally, each student completes a<br />
year-long senior project during which he or she works closely with a pr<strong>of</strong>essional artist.<br />
Many students participate in study abroad opportunities. Our goal, which is unique<br />
among colleges and universities, is for students to develop comprehensive knowledge <strong>of</strong><br />
the arts while also gaining the abilities to market their skills in today‘s competitive global<br />
economy.<br />
Minors: Most students take <strong>one</strong> or more minors in conjunction with their Studio Major.<br />
Minors in Art History, Pre-Art Therapy, Arts Management, Photography, Fashion<br />
Design, Theater and Visual Communications are common among Studio Art majors.<br />
Studio Art also <strong>of</strong>fers a popular minor with three tracks to choose among: a general<br />
Studio Art track and tracks that focus on 2-D or 3-D courses.<br />
Special Features:<br />
• All students work with pr<strong>of</strong>essionals in their area <strong>of</strong> interest during their internships:<br />
art therapists, art educators, museum curators & registrars, gallery owners & directors,<br />
arts administrators, animation studios and free-lance artists.<br />
• Students are individually matched with arts pr<strong>of</strong>essionals in their area <strong>of</strong> interest as<br />
part <strong>of</strong> their Senior Project. Students meet with their pr<strong>of</strong>essional contacts 4 times<br />
during their senior year.<br />
• Entering students take four Foundations courses (Drawing: Perception/Observation,<br />
Design + Color Theory, Structuring Human Space, and Time Movement Narrative)<br />
that prepare them for the advanced content <strong>of</strong> their Studio Art courses<br />
• The College has a highly respected pr<strong>of</strong>essional gallery with ongoing individual and<br />
group exhibitions, including the annual juried student exhibition and exhibitions <strong>by</strong><br />
graduating Studio Art majors.<br />
• Art Club is a student organization that arranges trips to New York City and area<br />
museums and galleries and carries out service projects.<br />
