This course provides the student<br />

with an overview <strong>of</strong> the issues<br />

encountered <strong>by</strong> managers in sports<br />

organizations. Ethical and moral<br />

issues facing sport managers will also<br />

be addressed. The course will explore<br />

career opportunities in sport with<br />

special emphasis being placed on<br />

helping the student understand the<br />

qualifications, skills, and career<br />

patterns <strong>of</strong> sport managers.<br />

Facility and Event Management<br />

3 credits (CS)<br />

This course provides students with indepth,<br />

hands-on experience managing<br />

all aspects <strong>of</strong> a major event, applying<br />

project management tools and<br />

teamwork skills. Students increase their<br />

knowledge <strong>of</strong>, and contacts in, the<br />

event management pr<strong>of</strong>ession. This<br />

course is designed to simulate the<br />

world <strong>of</strong> work and is delivered using a<br />

problem based learning model.<br />

Working in groups, students will direct<br />

their own learning <strong>by</strong> researching,<br />

planning, designing, executing and<br />

evaluating all facets <strong>of</strong> a major event.<br />

Organization and Administration <strong>of</strong><br />

Sport<br />

This course provides knowledge and<br />

awareness <strong>of</strong> the rules and laws<br />

governing various sport organizations<br />

and participants, including developing<br />

an understanding <strong>of</strong> the structures <strong>of</strong><br />

various sport governing bodies in<br />

amateur and pr<strong>of</strong>essional sport;<br />

developing an awareness <strong>of</strong> the role <strong>of</strong><br />

the policies in the management <strong>of</strong> these<br />

organizations; acquiring the skills<br />

necessary to develop policies within an<br />

organization; understanding the<br />

social, legal, ethical, economic, political<br />

and educational impact <strong>of</strong><br />

organizational policies; and understanding<br />

how individual sport managers<br />

impact organizational policy decisions.<br />

Current Issues in Sport<br />

Management<br />

3 credits (CS)<br />

This course introduces students to<br />

current topics and issues in the field <strong>of</strong><br />

sport and sport management. The<br />

course provides the student with an indepth<br />

look at and analysis <strong>of</strong> many <strong>of</strong><br />

the current issues facing the sports<br />

industry as well as issues encountered<br />

<strong>by</strong> managers <strong>of</strong> sports organizations.<br />

The course will help the student apply<br />

sport management techniques to<br />

effectively address current issues and<br />

problems. The course consists <strong>of</strong><br />

interactive discussion with the students<br />

being responsible for presenting and<br />

researching the current material.<br />

Critical thinking and problem-solving<br />

skills are fostered during the course.<br />

Topics include gender equity, racial<br />

issues, National Collegiate Athletic<br />

Association rules, franchise relocations,<br />

sport agency, and athlete conduct<br />

issues.<br />
