Time, Movement, and Narrative<br />

3 credits (CS)<br />

Students explore concepts <strong>of</strong> time<br />

based art and design to create works in<br />

media ranging from video, animation,<br />

multimedia, audio and performance.<br />

Students create both narrative and nonnarrative<br />

video and time based<br />

structures, with emphasis on the<br />

development <strong>of</strong> students‘ ideas, visual<br />

and narrative skills. This class stresses<br />

the development <strong>of</strong> visual expression,<br />

self-expression, and ideation/concept<br />

building, using techniques and<br />

strategies that include storyboarding,<br />

scriptwriting, proposal and<br />

design/creative brief writing. Students<br />

will work collaboratively and<br />

individually in creating original works<br />

in digital video, and other time-based<br />

media, including options such as hand<br />

drawn and frame animation, video<br />

installation, performance, sound, and<br />

sculptural elements. Students research<br />

the work <strong>of</strong> contemporary and recent<br />

video, performative, animation artists,<br />

and motion designers in order to place<br />

their work in the context <strong>of</strong><br />

contemporary international practice in<br />

multiple disciplines.<br />

Figure Drawing<br />

Figure Drawing is a second year<br />

drawing course emphasizing the human<br />

figure. The nude model is used as a<br />

vehicle for learning about<br />

foreshortening, proportion, and varied<br />

drawing media. Simultaneously,<br />

students explore historic, conceptual<br />

and expressive aspects <strong>of</strong> the human<br />

figure in art. For advanced work in<br />

Printmaking<br />

Students are exposed to various<br />

printmaking techniques such as:<br />

intaglio, relief, and a range <strong>of</strong><br />

experimental applications. Knowledge<br />

<strong>of</strong> these media enable students to<br />

experience new drawing techniques and<br />

to gain an understanding <strong>of</strong> the art <strong>of</strong><br />

multiples. For advanced work in<br />

printmaking, this course can be<br />

Ceramics<br />

Students are introduced to the basic<br />

methods <strong>of</strong> preparing and forming clay,<br />

so as to develop an understanding <strong>of</strong><br />

clay as a sculptural and functional<br />

medium. They are exposed to pinch,<br />

coil and slab methods, as well as wheel<br />

throwing, decorating and glazing. For<br />

advanced work in ceramics, this course<br />
