Students work in a fully equipped<br />

studio using strobe lighting systems,<br />

medium format and digital cameras to<br />

create portraiture, figure and product<br />

techniques are studied. (Offered fall<br />

Digital Photography<br />

3 credits (CS)<br />

This course covers the practice <strong>of</strong><br />

digital photography with emphasis on<br />

using pr<strong>of</strong>essional production<br />

techniques to build an efficient<br />

workflow to maximize productivity and<br />

creativity with digital photography.<br />

Students learn techniques <strong>of</strong> image<br />

capture, camera controls, digital<br />

exposure, brightness range and optics<br />

for optimal digital images, color<br />

management, color theory, and<br />

optimizing files for print. Students also<br />

learn image distribution and<br />

organization using Adobe Lightroom<br />

to create an image database using<br />

tagging XIFF data, search, to assist in<br />

cataloging and archiving digital images.<br />

Students will begin working on a body<br />

<strong>of</strong> images that reflects their artistic<br />

interests. Creative decision-making,<br />

problem solving, and the relationship<br />

between personal vision and<br />

contemporary art practice will all be<br />

explored. Through discussion, research,<br />

essay writing, critique, and creative<br />

response, students will engage in a<br />

critical dialog with the work <strong>of</strong> their<br />

peers and recognized contemporary<br />

artists in order to inform their own<br />

creative process.<br />

Computer Imaging<br />

3 credits (CS)<br />

This course covers theory and practice<br />

<strong>of</strong> digital imaging in a creative context.<br />

Technical skills are developed with an<br />

emphasis on using digital tools to begin<br />

creating a personal vision. Students<br />

learn how to capture, control,<br />

manipulate and print digital images<br />

using Adobe Photoshop, a desktop<br />

computer, analog and digital cameras,<br />

scanners, desktop and large format<br />

printers. Students learn Photoshop<br />

technique <strong>by</strong> completing a series <strong>of</strong><br />

assignments and exercises that cover<br />

basics <strong>of</strong> digital imaging theory, digital<br />

camera RAW file adjustments and<br />

management, image sizing and<br />

resolution, basic image control, tonal<br />

and color correction, retouching, hand<br />

coloring, sharpening, noise<br />

management, filtering, addition <strong>of</strong> text,<br />

creative selection, contrast masking,<br />

layer masks, collage and montage<br />

techniques, and more.<br />
