Introduction to Criminal Justice<br />

This course will provide an overview <strong>of</strong><br />
the comp<strong>one</strong>nts <strong>of</strong> the criminal justice<br />
system, including the courts, the police,<br />
trials, legislative mandates and the<br />
alternatives <strong>of</strong> incarceration,<br />
community diversion, probation,<br />
parole, terrorism and homeland<br />
security. This course will examine<br />
conflicts within the criminal justice<br />
system, such as the rights <strong>of</strong> victims<br />
versus the rights <strong>of</strong> the accused.<br />
CJ 152<br />
Juvenile Delinquency<br />
3 credits (CS)<br />
This course is designed to help students<br />
understand the nature <strong>of</strong> juvenile<br />
delinquency, its causes and correlates, as<br />
well as strategies utilized to control or<br />
eliminate its occurrence. Criminology<br />
applied to juveniles is a dynamic, everchanging<br />
field <strong>of</strong> inquiry. Students will<br />
explore recent developments and trends<br />
in the field <strong>by</strong> researching contemporary<br />
issues.<br />

CJ 251<br />
Corrections and Alternatives<br />
3 credits (CS)<br />
This course introduces students to<br />
issues and practices <strong>of</strong> a modern<br />
corrections system. Students will<br />
examine the historical development <strong>of</strong><br />
the current system as well as the role <strong>of</strong><br />
corrections, parole and probation, in<br />
our society. Students will also explore<br />
the methods <strong>of</strong> corrections<br />
management, current corrections<br />
practices, and alternatives, such as<br />

house arrest, electronic monitoring, day<br />
treatment, boot camps and drug courts,<br />
and the importance <strong>of</strong> community<br />
corrections.<br />

CJ 252<br />
Crime Scene Investigation<br />
3 credits (CS)<br />
An overview <strong>of</strong> approaches to<br />
detecting and resolving crimes through<br />
the discovery, collection, and<br />
preservation <strong>of</strong> physical evidence. This<br />
course will provide students with a<br />
mixture <strong>of</strong> theoretical and ―hands-on‖<br />
instruction in approaches to and<br />
techniques used <strong>by</strong> the criminal<br />
investigator at the crime scene. A crime<br />
scene kit fee will be charged.<br />

Criminal Law and Procedure<br />

This course will examine the bodies <strong>of</strong><br />
law that provide definitions <strong>of</strong> crimes,<br />
and procedures for dealing with them.<br />
An examination <strong>of</strong> rights <strong>of</strong> the<br />
accused will also be explored.<br />
