Critical Thinking: Language<br />

and Logic<br />

3 credits (AS)<br />

Students are introduced to and develop<br />

a range <strong>of</strong> critical thinking and<br />

reasoning skills necessary for effectively<br />

analyzing the assorted claims with<br />

which life confronts them. The course<br />

covers the basics <strong>of</strong> informal logic,<br />

specific types <strong>of</strong> argument, common<br />

errors in reasoning, and the keys to<br />

evaluating and constructing extended<br />

arguments. These tools are then applied<br />

to a variety <strong>of</strong> cases in which argument<br />

(<strong>of</strong>ten poor argument) plays an<br />

especially strong role: advertising, the<br />

news media, and politics. As a result,<br />

students gain skills useful for<br />

succeeding in both the college<br />

environment as well as that <strong>of</strong> the<br />

broader information society a whole.<br />

Liberal Studies Internship<br />

3 credits (CS)<br />

The Liberal Studies internship is an<br />

elective course that gives Liberal<br />

Studies students the opportunity to test<br />

career options related to their area <strong>of</strong><br />

study. The internship includes a set <strong>of</strong><br />

preliminary class meetings on<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional conduct and their<br />

connections to liberal arts study.<br />

Seminars accompany the internships to<br />

allow for exchange <strong>of</strong> information<br />

about students‘ internship experiences.<br />

The College makes final arrangements<br />

for the internship placement and<br />

provides transportation when possible.<br />

Environmental Ethics<br />

3 credits (AS)<br />

This course will examine the current<br />

theoretical and practical issues<br />

contained in the field <strong>of</strong> environmental<br />

ethics. The course explores the diverse<br />

responses to the concerns raised <strong>by</strong><br />

environmental problems, analyzing the<br />

ethical underpinnings <strong>of</strong> a wide variety<br />

<strong>of</strong> perspectives. During the course we<br />

will examine such issues as the value <strong>of</strong><br />

wilderness, our duties to animals and<br />

the natural world, obligations to future<br />

generations, human relationships to<br />

nature, and environmental justice.<br />

HU 361<br />

Commitment and Choice<br />

3 credits (AS)<br />

This course serves as an in-depth<br />

introduction to practical ethics through<br />

the analysis <strong>of</strong> issues <strong>of</strong> contemporary<br />

moral, cultural, and political concern.<br />

Students will encounter a diverse range<br />

<strong>of</strong> views on some <strong>of</strong> the most<br />

contentious issues <strong>of</strong> the day, identify<br />

relevant moral facts and reasons,<br />

critically examine their own values, and<br />

develop the intellectual and critical<br />

skills necessary for both further study<br />

as well as for navigating the <strong>of</strong>ten<br />

tumultuous cultural and moral<br />

landscape <strong>of</strong> today.<br />

Prerequisites: EN 201 Academic Writing II.
