could be used successfully in the applications for which it was intended. One compiler vendor
adopted the kernel as the basis for its runtime approach.
The SEI Contribution
The SEI developed this prototype in parallel with other, complementary, efforts. Compiler vendors
were using the Ada package concept to provide primitives for the applications engineers to
manage their distributed, real-time applications. Indeed, this approach became the norm. By making
the code of the kernel widely available, the SEI demonstrated that Ada could be used for its
intended purpose and provided confidence to the early adopters that such an approach was not
only feasible, but would be supportable.
