2 years/4 semesters Fall Ontario College Diploma Morningside<br />

Recently, the union representing Toronto paramedics has raised concerns about a shortage of<br />

paramedic hiring in the region, making this an in-demand career. To prepare you, this program will<br />

cover emergency, medical, trauma and psychological situations. Besides physical care, you will also<br />

learn to provide support to people in crisis by drawing on a unique combination of analytical and<br />

professional therapeutic skills. To complement hands-on training in advanced simulation labs, you<br />

will participate in mock disaster exercises and extensive on-the-job learning through field and clinical<br />

placements. After graduation, you will be eligible and prepared for the Ministry of Health exam for<br />

Advanced Emergency Medical Care Assistant (A-EMCA).<br />

CAREER OUTLOOK<br />

• Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD)<br />

• Mathematics Grade 11 M or U, or 12 C or U,<br />

or equivalent (minimum grade required)<br />

• Biology Grade 11 or 12 C or U, or equivalent<br />

(minimum grade required)<br />

• One additional science (Physics, Chemistry<br />

or Exercise Science) Grade 11 C or U, or<br />

Grade 12 C or U or M or equivalent (minimum<br />

grade required)<br />

• English language proficiency<br />

Notes:<br />

1. Before taking this program, you should be aware that<br />

under the provisions of the Ambulance Act of Ontario,<br />

employment as a paramedic is prohibited to any<br />

individual who has:<br />

» Received six or more demerit points on their<br />

driving record in the last year<br />

» Had their driver’s licence suspended in the<br />

previous two years<br />

» Been prohibited from driving under the Criminal<br />

Code of Canada within the past three years<br />

» Been convicted of any crime involving moral<br />

turpitude for which they have not been pardoned<br />

2. Courses must have been completed within seven years of<br />

the program start date<br />

3. It’s strongly recommended that you have a high level of<br />

fitness when entering the program.<br />

Unique in Canada, the program is grounded in the fundamentals of life science, and focuses on the<br />

critical thinking, research and laboratory experience needed to save lives. You will examine and be<br />

immersed in the spectrum of emergency medical, trauma and psychological situations today’s health<br />

professionals face. In Paramedicine, you will earn an Honours Bachelor of Science degree and an<br />

Ontario College Diploma while learning from leading academics and professionals.<br />

The program will prepare you for the Ontario Ministry of Health Advanced Emergency Medical Care<br />

Attendant (AEMCA) exam and will position you for advanced careers in the field of emergency<br />

medical services.<br />
