Pre-Service Firefighter Education and Training 1260<br />

1 year/3 semesters Fall Ontario College Certificate Progress<br />

It’s expected that this program — designed in accordance with the Ontario Association of Fire<br />

Chiefs and the Ontario Office of the Fire Marshal’s approved curriculum — will increasingly become<br />

a minimum criterion for fire service hiring in Ontario. To make you an eligible operational firefighter<br />

candidate, this program will combine theory and practical learning as you develop fire suppression,<br />

rescue operations and environmental protection skills. At Ajax Fire Services’ training facilities and<br />

Morningside Campus’ medical lab, you will acquire hands-on experience. When you graduate, you<br />

will be eligible to write the National Fire Protection Association 1001 Firefighter 1 and 2, and 472<br />

Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations testing.<br />

CAREER OUTLOOK<br />

Firefighter / Hazmat firefighter / Airport firefighter<br />

• Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD)<br />

or equivalent, or mature student status<br />

(19 years or older)<br />

• English Grade 12 C or U, or equivalent<br />

(minimum grade required) or take the<br />

Centennial College English Skills Assessment<br />

for Admission<br />

• Mathematics Grade 11 or 12 C, M or U, or<br />

equivalent (minimum grade required) or take<br />

the Centennial College Math Skills<br />

Assessment for Admission<br />

• One Science Grade 11 or 12 (Physics,<br />

Chemistry, Biology or Exercise Science) C or<br />

U, or equivalent (minimum grade required) or<br />

take the Centennial College Science Skills<br />

Assessment for Admission<br />

• English language proficiency<br />

• Provide a clear medical report<br />

• Complete/update CPR and First Aid training<br />

• Assume the cost for your uniforms, personal<br />

protective equipment, study materials and<br />

mandatory tests including but not limited to<br />

physical fitness testing, and other<br />

provincially required testing.<br />

Notes:<br />

1. Though not required for this program, you should be<br />

aware that to secure employment with a municipal fire<br />

service, you must, among other things, have 20/30<br />

vision, pass a physical and medical fitness test, and have<br />

no criminal record.<br />

2. Additional requirements will apply prior to field<br />
