METAPHORS AND ANALOGIES Once learned about the teacher, it is now the time to devote our attention to some of the techniques that would help us to fix the concepts as permanently as possible in our mind. There are various strategies for memorizing concepts, one of the simplest to implement is to associate a certain thought with a visual analogy that is easy to remember. Visual object memory is a much more effective and powerful tool in allowing you to understand concepts, compared to remembering a sequence of elements that are not understood and digested instead (Oakley, 2018 [2]). The analogy allows us to associate the idea of a concept or thing with the image of another. For example, if we are studying electric current, one can visualize it as hydraulic flow: the electrons that move in the electrical conductor are like the water molecules that flow in a tube. The electrical voltage applied to the ends of the same conductor can be viewed as the pressure that water exerts at the end of the tube. As we proceed in the study and better understand the phenomena, these analogies can be put aside, but they are an excellent method for recalling concepts from memory. This method can be applied to the most common objects found on elevators. Considering that a good percentage of installers mount rope clips upside down, it is worth examining the following example with an analogy. The phrase to remember is “Never saddle a dead horse.” With this mental association, it is easy to visualize a horse lying on its back on which it is practically useless to place a saddle. If this image is still not clear, keep in mind that the clamp to be installed on the ropes is made up of two main parts: the saddle and the clip. The first is shaped like the horse saddle and has been specifically designed not to damage the load-bearing section (or live section) of the rope. The second part called clip, imposes a strong deformation on the rope, and it is therefore necessary to install it on the section of the dead end of the rope itself. Now, with the previous clarifications, the concept of visualization works in a much more concrete way. Visually connecting this image with the components of a rope clip, it is quite intuitive to identify the two parts. In this sense, the mental association is showing us to position the saddle of the clamp on the “live horse”, that is, on the supporting part of the rope and not on its dead end. METAFORE E ANALOGIE Una volta identificato l’insegnante, è ora il momento di dedicare la nostra attenzione ad alcune delle tecniche che ci devono aiutare a fissare i concetti nella maniera più duratura possibile nella nostra mente. Esistono varie strategie per memorizzare concetti, una delle più semplici da attuare è associare un determinato pensiero ad un’analogia visiva facile da ricordare. La memoria visuale è uno strumento molto più efficace e potente per comprendere i concetti, rispetto al ricordare una sequenza di elementi che non vengono invece compresi e digeriti (Oakley, 2018 [2]). L’analogia ci consente di associare l’idea di un concetto o cosa all’immagine di un altro. Ad esempio, se stiamo studiando la corrente elettrica, è possibile visualizzarla come flusso idraulico: gli elettroni che si muovono nel conduttore elettrico sono come le molecole d’acqua che scorrono in un tubo. La tensione elettrica applicata alle estremità dello stesso conduttore può essere vista come la pressione che l’acqua esercita all’estremità del tubo stesso. Mentre procediamo nello studio e comprendiamo meglio i fenomeni, queste analogie possono essere messe da parte, ma sono un metodo eccellente per richiamare concetti dalla memoria. Questo metodo può essere applicato agli oggetti più comuni presenti sugli ascensori. Considerando che una buona percentuale di installatori posiziona al contrario i morsetti a cavallotto sulle funi, vale la pena esaminare il seguente esempio con un’analogia. La frase da ricordare è “Mai sellare un cavallo morto”. Con questa associazione mentale, è facile visualizzare un cavallo sdraiato sulla schiena su cui è praticamente inutile posizionare una sella. Se questa immagine non è ancora chiara, tenete presente che il morsetto da installare sulle funi è composto da due parti principali: la sella e il cavallotto. La prima ha la forma di una sella appunto, ed è stata appositamente progettata per non danneggiare il tratto portante della fune (detto anche tratto vivo). La seconda parte chiamata cavallotto, impone una forte deformazione sulla fune ed è quindi necessario installarla sulla sezione del tratto morto della fune stessa. Ora, con i chiarimenti precedenti, il concetto di visualizzazione funziona in modo molto più concreto. Collegando visivamente questa immagine con i componenti di un morsetto a cavallotto per funi, è abbastanza intuitivo identificare le due parti. In questo senso, l’associazione mentale ci sta mostrando di posizionare la sella del morsetto sul “cavallo vivo”, cioè sulla parte portante della fune e non sul suo capo morto. Clearly there are other elements to consider when installing the clips, but on this occasion, we only want to focus on the mental association to position the components on the correct side of the rope. Chiaramente ci sono altri elementi da considerare quando si installano tali morsetti, ma in questa occasione, vogliamo solo concentrarci sull’associazione mentale per posizionare i componenti sul lato corretto della fune.
