Chile, past and present
Cile, tra passato e presente
C
hile is located in the extreme west and south
part of Latin America, bordered to the west
by the Pacific Ocean and to the east by the
Andes mountain range. It is 4,270 km long, more
than 3 times the length of Italy, and with an average
width of just 200 km. It presents an incredible variety
of contrasting landscapes: to the north, the arid
Atacama desert; in the centre, multiple cities and
extensive cultivation of vineyards and olive trees; to
the south, big lakes, huge forests and high peaks,
giving way to the Patagonian lands.
meridionale dell’America Latina, delimitato
a ovest dall’oceano Pacifico e a est dalla
cordigliera delle Ande. Lungo ben 4.270 km,
numerose città ed estese coltivazioni di vigne e ulivi;
al sud, grandi laghi, immense foreste e alte vette,
che lasciano il passo ai territori patagonici.
In the fertile valleys of the centre 50% of the
population lives: Santiago, the capital city, has
been recently transformed into a huge and modern
metropolis, and currently has almost 7 million
inhabitants. Another 2 million live in the nearby
and populous region of Valparaíso, famous for its
colourful houses, lifts and the harbour (the second
largest in Chile), with 10 million tons of goods and
100,000 tourists every year.
Chile is a young country having ancestral origins,
so much so that the first human settlements date
back to 12,800 years ago. Among the pre-Hispanic
populations, the proud Mapuche must surely be
remembered: the only ones who managed to
tenaciously fight against the Spanish conquest.
In fact, in the 16th century, the arrival of the
conquistadores determined the beginning of the
Araucanía War: a conflict lasting more than 300
years (the longest in history) and that, if it prevented
the Iberian colonizers from dominating entirely
the southern territories, allowed the Mapuche to
maintain their autonomy until the 19th century.
After the independence, achieved in 1810, Chile was
ruled by various types of democratic governments,
and this led to the establishment of a presidential
republic in 1925. Moreover, between the nineteenth
and twentieth centuries, the country experienced
rapid industrialization and urbanization, thanks
to the exploitation of large copper reserves and
a 12.800 anni fa. Tra le popolazioni preispaniche
vanno sicuramente ricordati i fieri mapuche: gli
unici che riuscirono a opporsi tenacemente alla
conquista spagnola.
In seguito all’indipendenza, raggiunta nel 1810,
veloce industrializzazione e urbanizzazione, grazie allo
commercio. Tale sviluppo incoraggiò l’immigrazione
