On the contrary, the downstream station
is incorporated in a mixed use building
(commercial on the ground floor, residential
on the two upper floors), without any special
character that allows the infrastructure to be
recognized from the street.
The design approach is based, also in this case,
on a careful study of the lift and the relevant
context, aiming at the best solution for the two
stations. Their nature, deeply different, requires
interventions of different methods, but with
the same purpose: to give back to the city one
of its most significant lifts, a real landmark,
preserving its original features, but also meeting
the contemporary needs (not only social, but also
technical and maintenance related).
The building that houses the downstream station,
to be more recognizable, is raised by one floor
(an opportunity allowed by the urban planning
tool in force), with an addition of translucent
material, capable of turning into a lantern with
darkness, easily identifiable by those walking
along El Plan.
For the upstream end, the aim is to maintain
the original typological-constructive features,
without additions, therefore, innovating the
image with the use of a perforated sheet metal
cladding (which allows light to pass from the
outside during the day and vice versa at night);
the large internal volume can host socio-cultural
functions that make the building ‘alive’ during
the day. As with the Villaseca lift, it was also
decided to leave the technological components
visible, to facilitate maintenance and above all
to draw the attention of the users. Finally, the
pedestrian bridge has been redesigned not as a
mere connecting element, but as a mirador from
which to admire the city and the ocean.

carattere distintivo che consenta la riconoscibilità
dell’infrastruttura dalla pubblica via.
L’approccio progettuale è basato, anche in questo
caso, su un attento studio dell’ascensore e del
contesto di riferimento, ricercando la miglior
soluzione d’intervento per le due stazioni. La
loro natura, profondamente diversa, richiede
interventi di differente metodo, ma con medesima
finalità: restituire alla città uno dei suoi ascensori
più significativi, un vero e proprio landmark,
conservandone il carattere originario, ma pure
rispondendo alle esigenze (non solo sociali, ma
anche tecnico-manutentive) contemporanee.
L’edificio che ospita la stazione di valle, per
essere più riconoscibile, è sopraelevato di un
piano (opportunità consentita dallo strumento
urbanistico vigente), con un’addizione in
materiale traslucido, capace di trasformarsi in
una lanterna con il buio, facilmente individuabile
da chi si muove lungo El Plan.
Per la terminazione di monte, l’obiettivo è quello
di mantenerne i caratteri tipologico-costruttivi
originari, senza addizioni dunque, innovandone
l’immagine con l’impiego di un rivestimento
in lamiera forata (che lasci passare la luce
dall’esterno verso l’interno di giorno e viceversa
di notte); l’ampio volume interno si presta a
ospitare funzioni socioculturali che facciano
‘vivere’ l’edificio durante il giorno. Come per
l’ascensore Villaseca, inoltre, si è deciso di
lasciare a vista le componenti tecnologiche, per
facilitarne la manutenzione e soprattutto per
incuriosire gli utilizzatori. Il ponte pedonale,
infine, è ripensato non come mero elemento
di congiunzione, bensì quale mirador, da cui
ammirare la città e l’Oceano.
