Urban mobility and lifts<br />
The mobility topic has always characterized<br />
the history of cities, especially those with the<br />
most complex orography, where connecting<br />
areas located at different altitudes, for the<br />
movement of people and goods, has driven the<br />
use of technological solutions for easing the<br />
overcoming of topographical and architectural<br />
constraints in a quicker way.<br />
After the use of machine driven by animals and<br />
pulleys, reported in Renaissance manuscripts,<br />
between the end of the 19 th century and the<br />
beginning of the 20 th , the first urban lifts were<br />
installed in strategic<br />
positions. Still visible<br />
(even if today mainly<br />
for ‘tourist’ use),<br />
for example, are the<br />
Elevador de Santa Justa<br />
in Lisbon, opened in<br />
1901, and the Elevador<br />
Lacerda in Salvador<br />
de Bahia, installed<br />
in 1873, the first lift<br />
installed in Brazil. These<br />
are ‘specific’ solutions<br />
connecting various<br />
city portions through<br />
easily recognizable<br />

Mobilità urbana e ascensori<br />
Il tema della mobilità ha sempre caratterizzato la<br />
storia delle città, soprattutto quelle dall’orografia<br />
più articolata, dove collegare aree collocate a<br />
quote altimetriche differenti, per lo spostamento<br />
di persone e merci, è stato stimolo per l’impiego<br />
di soluzioni tecnologiche, che agevolassero il<br />
più agevole e rapido superamento dei vincoli<br />
topografici e architettonici.<br />
Dopo l’impiego della forza animale e di carrucole,<br />
già documentato in manoscritti del Rinascimento,<br />
tra la fine del XIX secolo e l’inizio del XX, si<br />
installano i primi elevatori urbani, in posizioni<br />
strategiche. Ancora<br />
visibili (anche<br />
se oggi destinati<br />
prevalentemente a uso<br />
‘turistico’) sono, ad<br />
esempio, l’Elevator<br />
Santa Justa a Lisbona,<br />
aperto nel 1901, e<br />
l’Elevator Lacera a<br />
Salvador de Bahia,<br />
installato nel 1873,<br />
primo ascensore di<br />
tutto il Brasile. Sono<br />
