Striking a balance between work and life, women

entrepreneurs are important stakeholders in the

country’s economic development. Strong, confident

and passionate, many of them have created a name for

themselves. Neelam Mohan is one such entrepreneur, who,

at 38 started her own garment export house from her garage

with just four tailors. This former freelance designer has

single-handedly built Magnolia Martinique Clothing Private

Limited. Today, this business empire employs thousands

of people across multiple factories and has an office

at Noida.

Stepping Stones To Success

Exceptionally skilled in the art from a very young age,

Ms. Mohan studied painting as an elective subject during

her bachelor’s degree at Banaras Hindu University. The

daughter of a railway employee, she travelled a lot during

her childhood. Growing up in cities like Benaras, Delhi and

Punjab enriched her creativity, social and communication

skills. After she married Mr. Amit Mohan and moved to

Delhi, she got her first break as a freelance designer. Her

artistic prowess yielded unique and creative designs that

impressed the clients. Thanks to her outstanding work

and professionalism, she managed to impress every one

of them.

Ms. Mohan holds the honour of being the first Indian to

create designs for some major European brands and has

collaborated with numerous international labels including

Roberto Cavalli, Anthropologie, Guess Jeans, the Valentino

group, etc. She has won the Apparel Export Promotion

Council “Achievement Award” in 2007 in recognition of her

outstanding contribution to the export industry.

A Dream Fuelled By Passion

When Ms. Mohan launched Magnolia Blossom, a children’s

apparel venture, she only had a handful of employees.

They worked very hard and carried out each task with care

and diligence.

Always willing to take risks, Ms. Mohan saw the potential

in making a shift from children’s wear to women’s wear.

This bold move turned out to be a highly beneficial one for

the business and helped the company achieve phenomenal

growth.

A Compassionate Soul

A successful entrepreneur, Ms. Mohan also possesses a

generous spirit. In 2007, to commemorate the memory of

her parents, she started Panchvati with the aim to make a

positive change in the lives of senior citizens. An NGO that

is India’s first and only short-stay assisted living facility for

senior citizens, Panchvati aims to meet the special needs

of the elders by offering them daycare and accommodation

facilities for a day, a week, a month or a lifetime in a warm

and nurturing environment. Passionate about this cause,

Ms. Mohan has also rallied for a policy change at IICA that

led to the inclusion of elder care into CSR.

Content that the future of her company is safe in the

hands of her son and daughter-in-law, she now leads the

technical department of Magnolia Martinique Clothing

Private Limited, a role that leaves her some time to pursue

social causes.
