Under his direction, the JagoraniChakra Foundation undertakes local,regional and national programmes forthe ultra-poor, poor and underprivilegedcommunities to build the capacity toshare resources. The foundation alsoencourages them to develop, controland sustain their endeavours to achievegreater prosperity.With a desire to do meaningful work,he started the Foundation in 1975 withsome of his peers as an initiative toimprove adult literacy and better thelives of the marginalized. Little did heknow that this tiny step would becomea huge leap for humanity in the yearsto come. He led a team of young andenergetic people with a proclivity tobreak social stigma to make the sweepersin his vicinity aware of their rights. Hehelped them form self-help groups andencouraged them to send their childrento school. He also implemented aproject that helped poor women conductincome-generation activities.Impacting Millions of LivesIn 2002, Mr. Arzoo took the audaciousstep of working for the welfare ofcommercial sex workers and theirchildren, which has led to theintegration of more than 100 childreninto mainstream society. At present, Mr.Arzoo leads a team of over 6,000 staffmembers offering their valuable servicesto about 12 lakh people in Bangladesh.Through a leadership style that revolvesaround empowerment and transparency,he believes in promoting a friendly yetprofessional environment based on afoundation of strong values. His strategicthinking and professional experiencehave enabled the foundation to progresson an accelerated and sustainablegrowth path. He has implementedvarious microfinance programmes onSustainable Livelihood, Education,Environmental Sustainability, HumanRights and Social Justice as well as HealthIntervention and Social Businesses.Today, through the intervention of theFoundation, thousands of learners havebenefited from adult literacy and nonformalprimary education.
